This past Fourth of July, I participated in a virtual 5k for Relay For Life! I am currently in Ohio visiting family, and the day of the 5k I was on Kelleys Island on Lake Erie (my family has a cottage there). My little brother Mike was visiting as well, and he did the run with me!
The day before, we rode around on the golf cart and mapped out 3.1 miles. It turns out it’s almost exactly that from my front door, past the West quarry, and back. Gorgeous route! It ended up being 3.43 miles. My longest run yet!
Our view on our run 🙂
It was awesome because Mike moved to Chicago today to attend graduate school, so we had the opportunity to talk and bond. He is four years younger than me and I don’t see him nearly enough! We decided to do a fast-paced walk (he didn’t have running shoes, and I have two sprained ankles). It still ended up being my fastest mile and fastest 5k!
My nephew Toby held on to the medal for when I got back to the house. He is such a great helper! I now officially have two medals!
The 5k was the perfect start to my Fourth of July this year! I spent the rest of the day (and weekend) with family on the island. Next race: San Diego Beer Run in August!
- How did you spend your holiday?
- Have you ever done a virtual race?

I spent the 4th with my husband and son (the daughter went to a friend’s party) and we had a blast! Nice and relaxing. You’re in OH? Where? Close enough to Cinci for us to meet?

Fun!! Unfortunately not close enough 🙁 I’m in Elyria, just West of Cleveland. But I’ll get to meet you at BlogFest!! 🙂
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner
I knew you were going to love running!! Nice job you. I did a 5k with my son that day.

Thank you! Aw yeah I read your post!! That’s so sweet he did it with you even though he doesn’t love running 😉
Lindsey
I love making my brother do races with me! 🙂 Glad you got to spend some time with your family! Looks like you had a great place for your workout!
thebalancedbrunette
It was the perfect place!! Thanks girl 🙂
Angelena Riggs
Looks like a beautiful place for a run! Great job with your PR’s, and kudos for doing a 5k with 2 sprained ankles! Hope you’re having a wonderful vacay!
thebalancedbrunette
Thank you Angelena!! I got a massage after the 5k, and she really worked on my ankles… they’re not bruised, which I’m not sure is a good or bad thing haha but I’m glad I was able to complete the 5k with minimal pain!
Sarah @ Sweet Miles
Way to go on your 5K! I have never done a virtual race, but I really should consider it! It seems like a great way to stay motivated, and really make those weekend miles count when I just can’t get somewhere that’s actually hosting a race!
thebalancedbrunette
Thank you!! It was my first virtual race, and I really liked it. Of course the actual events are super fun, but it was perfect because I was traveling! Plus it holds you accountable to still running on your “off days” like holidays! 🙂

I love virtual races. They are the only way I have earned medals! My 2 real races were two small town for that LOL
thebalancedbrunette
Hahah Mary!! A medal is a medal 😉 haha
Melissa Burton
Nice run! I didn’t run over July 4th weekend but I have my eye on a race soon!
thebalancedbrunette
Thanks Melissa! Which run are you looking to do? 🙂
