Is there someone in your life that inspires you to live a healthy lifestyle? Who keeps you going when you feel like giving up? Who is your #HealthHero?
When I was asked by Oscar Insurance to write about my health hero, it seemed pretty obvious. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I have a number of health heroes who inspire me!
My Boyfriend
My boyfriend, Tim, was the first person to really introduce me to healthy active living. He is a disabled veteran (Navy) and a health coach. He helps people get healthy, and he’s always making healthy meals in our home. Cooking isn’t really my strong suit, so it’s awesome having a guy who loves to cook! We go on nightly walks, hiking, yoga, various workouts, and share our passion of health, nutrition, and fitness.
My Parents
My mom and dad started living a healthy, active lifestyle when I was in 7th grade. My dad had a minor heart attack, and it really opened their eyes to the importance of being healthy, eating the right foods, and minimizing stress. My house from then on was full of natural, organic foods. My mom cooked healthier meals, and we got a family membership to the new gym a couple towns away. My family’s health as a whole got better, and it taught me the essentials for being healthy, which I’m now able to instill in my own family’s lifestyle.
Archie
My puppy, Archie, is new to our family. He is the center of my universe! It may be silly, but he is like my child. He loves to play and be active, and I love to be active with him! I want to take him to all the dog parks (once he is fully vaccinated), and also on all the glorious hiking trails throughout LA. There’s nothing quite like puppy energy to keep you moving throughout the day! I even made a blog dedicated to dog-friendly things to do in LA! Check it out here if you’d like!
Living a healthy, active lifestyle is important to me. After my bipolar diagnosis, and then a cancer diagnosis six months later, being healthy is essential. It’s also imperative that I have health insurance. I do not have insurance through Oscar Insurance (I was simply asked to share my health heroes), but any insurance company that does its best to provide healthy living to individuals and families is awesome in my book!
“Oscar Insurance is a new kind of health insurance company that is using technology to make understanding insurance simple, intuitive, and human. In other words, the kind of healthcare we want for ourselves. As a healthcare provider, we partner with our members to help improve and manage their health. We guide them to the care they need (as opposed to just getting involved when the bill comes in!). We also encourage healthy behaviors with incentives like our Gym Reimbursement program” (Andrea Powers, Outreach Coordinator). Oscar Insurance is currently only available in New York & New Jersey.

Tim
Yayyyy! Thanks babe! I love our Healthy active life and our little bear. 🙂 can’t wait for our 5k coming up!
Mary
I would say my sisters are my health heros. Two have beat breast cancer, another is fighting chronic kidney disease and another is fighting her own weight issues. They all inspire me to keep pushing and stay focused on my own goals. I just hope that I can inspire people like they have for me.

That’s amazing Mary! If it’s any consolation, you’ve totally inspired me! Especially with the yoga and your desire for more in life. <3

Lynsday, wow, you had cancer?! I had NO idea about that, you are such a beautiful and positive and bubbly person (from your posts that I read, I know we have not met <3) that I cannot wrap my head around that! I HOPE you are doing well, and by your photos it seems to be so! You are lucky to have been introduced to a healthy lifestyle at a younger age! In seventh grade I ate no fruit, no veggies, no meats, didn't drink water and lived off carbs…yikes! I don't have a health hero, because my sicknesses made me take my health into my own hands and be a health hero for myself, and now i am a role model for my parents and i teach them about healthy living 🙂

Yes I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2009 (2 days before my 21st birthday). But I got through it with the support of my family and friends, & an amazing oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic! Thank you girl <3 I feel I am a pretty positive person, and I try to be! I'm glad I come off that way. I think it's super great that you're your own health hero! To have that strength and confidence is really inspiring to me and so many others. And the fact that you're teaching your parents how to be healthy is amazing!! 🙂

Maeby inspires me to keep healthy, just like Archie does for you! This is enhanced by the fact that Maeby is a big dog (almost 60 lbs), and has a ton of energy all.the.time. Like we’ve literally run 10 miles together and then she’s come home and just wants to play with me. So taking her running with me kills two birds with one stone – she gets her exercise (and calms down a bit!) and I get mine!
