Poverty Rates Are Falling In The US

January 31, 2020 By lyndsinreallife Leave a Comment

Over the last twenty years, the subject of poverty has been debated fiercely by political parties and voters across the US. Despite the heated discussions, there have been major improvements. As you can see from the infographic below, poverty rates have fallen in the last 50 years.

The aim for every US president is to raise standards of living and lift as many people out of poverty as possible, and over the course of successive terms, rates have fallen. In 1959, 27.3% of Americans were living in poverty. In 2014, the figure was 21.1%.

A string of acts and measures have impacted poverty rates and personal wealth over the last 90 years. In 1935, Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced a raft of measures, most notably the Social Security Act, to help those living in poverty, create job opportunities and fund construction projects. Lyndon B. Johnson passed amendments to the act in 1965, launching one of the most instrumental and impactful programs in US history, Medicare and Medicaid. The President also introduced food stamps, grants for education and training programs.

In 2012, 22.1 million Americans were lifted out of poverty as a result of Social Security measures, and 10.3 moved above the poverty line thanks to SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program.

Medicare has undoubtedly revolutionized standards of living among older people, with poverty rates for senior citizens falling from 35.2% in 1959 to 10% in 2014. Medicare reduces the risk of needing to borrow money to fund healthcare by 35 percent.

Working Through The Knots Of What Massage Therapy Could Do For You

August 14, 2019 By lyndsinreallife 2 Comments

Massage is something many of us do to relax, whether on a spa day or at home. It’s a comforting gesture from our partners after a hard day at work. In some cases, it’s even a way for us to get closer to the people we love. But, health? Surely massage can’t help with that?

Massage therapy can actually bring a whole load more health benefits than you might realize. In fact, massage is one of the oldest forms of medicine found to facilitate bodily healing. Even better, taking the time to make this a regular part of your routine can see you enjoying both health and mental benefits.

Admittedly, not all massages are created equal. Swedish massage, for example, is best for those who want a gentle and relaxing experience which works through some knots. Deep tissue massage, however, is a more pressured and targeted method of addressing specific muscle pains.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/-SxVq4bE2VI” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

To get the most out of massage therapy, it’s vital that you search around for the best option to suit your needs. Once you discover that, you’ll be free to enjoy massage therapy benefits including-

Relieved Postural Stress

A relief of postural stress is one of the most apparent massage benefits and can be found with the majority of options. This is especially useful for those with jobs that affect postural health such as office work, as it can undo the damage of sitting in a chair all day. That’s because a massage can help to address the imbalances that lead to issues such as neck stiffness and lower back pain. If you’re in one chair for the majority of your working day, then, massage is undoubtedly the therapy for you.

Emotional Regulation

Options like aromatherapy and Qigong massage are fantastic at regulating emotions. That’s because they focus on the senses rather than just posture using methods such as unblocking energies and essential oils. If you often feel stressed or anxious, then these therapies can help to unblock your mind as much as they do your body. Massages like these can be so useful that Qigong is even now regularly used in the case of special needs, particularly autism. Qigong for special needs works by increasing the ability of children with autism to regulate the emotions which they struggle with most of the time. And, it could go a long way towards helping you, too.

Improved Immunity

Last but not least, massage can also improve your immune system, as evidenced in a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The study found that regular massage led to a significant increase in white blood cell counts, meaning patients were better able to fight disease. As such, booking yourself in for a weekly massage could go a long way towards keeping you healthy at all times.

Instead of just leaving a massage for your spa days, you could well benefit from seeking a local trained massage therapist for regular sessions. Your health will certainly thank you for it!

Why Helping Yourself On Your Fitness Journey Isn’t A Bad Thing

May 29, 2019 By lyndsinreallife 7 Comments

Pexels

Like anything people can become passionate about, the fitness community can sometimes have those who take everything they do with utmost seriousness, and can become quite draconian when imparting advice. Of course, when this comes to matters of health and safety, or when it comes to actually promoting what works, this is completely fine. However, sometimes you may be intimidated, thinking that unless you are following ‘the perfect way,’ you’re not following a way at all.

Fitness is a metaphor for our life, in that if we want something, we have to stay committed and work for it. However, over time this can prevent you from making the progress you want despite putting work in. Fitness, like anything you do to better your life, should be enjoyable and something you look forward to when it’s at its best. If you hate every gym session, every healthy meal, and feel as though you simply have to suffer through it – you’re not going to last very long at all.

This is why, especially in the beginning, helping yourself out on your fitness journey isn’t a bad thing at all. After all, if you want to climb a mountain, it’s a good idea to bring climbing gear.

Consider:

A Shoulder To Lean On

A gym can be an intimidating place to be your first time there. You likely do not know what most of the equipment is outside of the obvious fixtures, and trying to navigate a busy gym during peak times can be a nightmare. This is why it can be important start with a gym induction, and to simply walk around the place to see what you can and can’t do. Asking questions such as what the weightlifting chalk policy can help illuminate what actions you should be taking.

Sometimes, it can be hard to simply get in a routine schedule. If you haven’t gone to the gym for some time, what makes your current need so different? Also, how might you ingratiate yourself into the fitness lifestyle well? We’d recommend that finding a shoulder to lean on could be a great idea. Perhaps you could look online at a forum dedicated to your local area, and try to find a gym buddy that way. Perhaps you might ask one of your friends to start this new lifestyle with you, if they have also suggested that they wish to become fitter.

When you have someone waiting on you as you’re waiting on them, both of you will find it much harder to let the other person down. This can help you both enjoy one another’s company and also gain a stronger and more dependable approach when helping each other overcome their lifts.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing this. In fact, it can be a much safer method of attending the gym. For example, having someone ‘spot you’ on the bench press can help you avoid being punished by gravity if placing too much weight on the bar. You can also both help each other with scheduling, your diets, observing the other’s form, and giving one another safety pointers. In fact, the more specialized an athlete becomes, the more they will have to rely on the opinions and help of other people. So as a novice, there’s absolutely zero shame in finding this for yourself, and the same goes for the use of excellent personal trainers.

Getting Active & Alert

While many of us love attending the gym, getting up at an early hour in the morning, walking to the gym in the pouring rain, and having to wake yourself up on the treadmill or by lifting weights can be enjoyable, yet a little rough to experience. Sometimes, we might wake up feeling full of energy and well rested. Other times, we might feel the complete opposite.

Does that mean we should cancel our gym session the moment we feel just a little tired? Of course not, that would be rather ridiculous. But it might also be that we need just a little help in getting active and alert each morning. For example, it might be that you decide to homebrew beautiful filter coffee to keep you alert and active each morning. You might also decide to use pre-workout to help you get in the zone. You might decide to run to the gym in order to wake up, or perhaps join a certain specialized class you must attend in order to get the blood moving. On top of that, ZMA supplements can help you feel more alert after a great night of rest.

Getting active and alert is the key to success with your fitness lifestyle. We would recommend you consider the powerful benefits of doing this. You never know just how much it could help.

Supplementation

Added supplementation can be a wonderful thing. From using Vitamin C and D supplements to help your immune system (preventing you from catching something such as a seasonal flu from gym equipment,) purchasing T5 fat burners to help you drop weight naturally, and also fulvic acid can help you gain minerals you might have lost out on before.

Protein supplements can help you repair your muscles after an intense gym session, and help you meet your daily macro requirement. On top of that, weight shakes can help you bulk up and put weight on, allowing you to exceed your daily need for certain calories if hoping to build muscle. BCAA’s can help your muscles repair even more appropriately, as they are literally providing the amino acids necessary to help you heal in the most fundamental manner possible.

If you have a fitness issue, either hard work, readjusting your schedule, sleeping, eating better, or supplementation can help it. But supplementation is often a dirty word, because of all the questionable products that can be sold, especially overseas. But enjoying the use of these, if properly vetted, can help you get to the next level of your fitness life. To that extent, this can be a net positive.

With these tips, you’re certain to help yourself on your fitness journey!

A Scientific Approach to Personal Health with The Home DNA Healthy Weight™ Test

February 26, 2018 By lyndsinreallife 2 Comments

I’m approaching 30, and my body is definitely feeling it. When I was a teenager, my mom would always tell me, “lose weight now, because it gets harder the older you get.” Ugh, I hate it when she’s right. 😉 Losing weight, getting fit, and finding the right foods to eat has been difficult, ever since I turned 25. My metabolism slowed down , and I felt that my genes were also a contributing factor.

Disclosure: I received a free Home DNA Healthy Weight™ kit + free lab fee in the hopes I’d mention it on my blog. In partnership with Lipton Publicity. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

To find out if my genes were causing any issues, I decided to take a healthy weight at-home genetic DNA test called The Home DNA Healthy Weight™ (created by The DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) Company). This test identifies nutrition and exercise strategies uniquely tailored to each individual based on their genetic makeup.

You learn about:

  • Your capacity to lose weight.
  • Your protein, fat, and carbohydrate utilization
  • The food and nutrients your body needs.
  • Cardio exercise and strength training for your body.
  • You even get a personalized meal plan based on your results.

The Home DNA Healthy Weight™ kit is extremely easy to use. They provide you with 4 swabs (essentially large Q-Tips), and all you do is swab the inside of your cheek (with all 4), and send them back in the mail! It took me about 2 minutes to complete this. There is a lab fee when you check out (all of this can be done online). You’ll receive your results (also online) about 6 weeks later!

Luckily, Home DNA is offering my readers a $50 discount on their own kit, which brings the price of the kit down to only $69!! That’s an AMAZING price, especially for all the information you get. Get your discount here: Home DNA discount.

The Healthy Weight fitness DNA test can help save a lot of time and money as you eliminate diets, supplements and workouts that are not optimal for you as an individual, weight management is not ‘one size fits all’ after all.
My results were really cool! I learned the my ability to lose weight is “below average” and my genes are “unfavorable,” so that wasn’t so cool. 😉 Honestly though, that made me feel better, knowing my lack of weight loss wasn’t entirely my fault. It taught me about how my body absorbs particular nutrients, what foods are best for me to eat (I’m allowed to eat carbs, woohoo!), and how I need to exercise to lose weight. It provided me with a meal plan, as well! I tried it out for the first week, and felt great. I’m the type of person who needs things laid out like this. It’s so much easier!
As you can see, much of my genes are unfavorable and below average, yay me!…

Here’s an example of a portion of the meal plan tailored specifically to me:

I highly recommend getting this genetic test done and finding out how to eat and exercise based on your specific body and genes! Get your own kit for $50 off using code HW50 or going directly to this link.

Healthy Eating Made Easy with FITzee Foods + Discount

October 22, 2016 By lyndsinreallife Leave a Comment

A couple weeks ago, I looked in the mirror and decided I really, truly needed to make a change. I’ve gained a significant amount of weight in the past few years, and not only does it look terrible, but I FEEL terrible.  I’ll admit, this was largely in part to my poor nutrition choices. Luckily there’s FITzee Foods.

Disclosure: I received 14 meals from FITzee Foods in the hopes I would give an honest review on my blog. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions, as always, are 100% my own.

FITzee Foods logo

FITzee Foods is a company in San Diego, Calif. that offers fresh (never frozen) pre-packaged, pre-portioned meals. The food is made with all-natural ingredients, including 100% grass-fed beef, 100% free-range chicken, and nitrate + hormone free turkey. The meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) come in little plastic containers that you put in the microwave when it’s time to eat. So simple!

What is a FITzee, you ask? As it states on their Facebook page,

“A FITzee is a busy professional, entrepreneur, mom, dad, athlete, weekend warrior, fitness enthusiast, and anyone else who seeks a nutritious, delicious, great-tasting alternative to the world of over-processed fast food. A FITzee believes that the path to living well is through eating foods that give you energy & taste great!”

The meals are seriously SO good. You can pick anything you want (and however many you want) if you order a la carte, or get a set amount if you order the meal plans or big boxes (but you still get to choose the meals). You also get to choose between small, medium, and large meals. I can’t eat a lot at once, so the small and medium were perfect for me. I ordered lunches and dinners since I always have a shake for breakfast.

The meals I tried are as follows:

  • Red Chicken Enchiladas
  • Paleo Carne Asada Bowl
  • Paleo BBQ Pork with Sweet Potatoes and Creamy Spinach
  • Paleo Spaghetti
  • Grilled Steak Quesadilla
  • Paleo Thai Coconut Curry Chicken
  • Paleo Chicken Cauli Rice

My favorite meals were the red chicken enchiladas and the grilled steak quesadilla (pictured below). They’re seriously AMAZING! And so filling. I liked the bbq pork, as well!

There are a lot of companies/services like FITzee Foods, so you’re probably wondering, what makes FITzee Foods stand out? One thing that’s great is that they ship anywhere in the US (and no subscription required!). I’ve tried a different service in this past, but if you don’t live near their retail store, you can’t get their meals. There’s nothing really like FITzee Foods in Las Vegas, so I’m really excited that I can place an order online and have the food shipped to me within a week! It comes in a cooler box, and everything was cold when it arrived. I also like that they have so many Paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free options. I don’t follow the Paleo diet, but I try not to consume too much dairy, wheat, soy, refined sugar, and so on. It’s nice that it’s pretty simple to pick meals that align with what I like to eat (or not eat).

Side note: There are also a few retail locations in San Diego where you can pick up your meals!

FITzee Foods is graciously offering a 15% discount for my readers! Visit www.fitzeefoods.com , use promo code lyndsinreallife15, and you’ll get 15% off now through Oct. 31st!

I’m really enjoying the convenience of FITzee Foods, and the fact that the meals are incredibly healthy! It’s helping me stay on track with my healthy, active lifestyle, and I am definitely a lifelong customer. Thank you FITzee Foods!

Guilt-Free Chicago Mix Popcorn + Giveaway!

October 20, 2014 By lyndsinreallife 7 Comments

A few months ago, I decided to cut out GMOs (genetically modified organisms) from my nutrition. I wanted to be as physically healthy as I could so that my mind would be healthy too. Over the past few months, I’ve been on the lookout for non-GMO snacks. That’s when I found GH Cretors non-GMO popcorn.

Disclosure: I contacted GH Cretors in the hopes of sampling their product. I received a case of Chicago Mix popcorn in exchange for a review and giveaway on my blog. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.

GH Cretors Popcorn nonGMO

What makes GH Cretors different from other popcorn?

It is free of:

  • artificial flavors or colors
  • GMOs
  • gluten (naturally)
  • corn syrup

What is the Chicago Mix?

The Chicago Mix is what I received, and I’m a big fan!

“Today we make our Caramel Corn just like Great Grandpa did- in old-fashioned copper kettles, one batch at a time. Then we mix it up the Chicago way, with our rich, creamy, Aged Cheddar Cheese Corn to create the perfect combination of Sweet and Salty. You don’t even have to come to Chicago to try this special treat” (website).

It contains ingredients you recognize and tastes absolutely delicious! My boyfriend and I went through a case pretty quickly. Plus it’s fun to share with friends: the girl I babysit likes the caramel corn, and I like the cheese corn, so we like to split it!

GIVEAWAY!

GH Cretors has graciously offered for me to give away one case of the Chicago Mix popcorn! One case= 24 bags (1.5 oz single-serve). You must be living in the US. GH Cretors will send the case directly to you (I will email the winner for their contact info). Enter by using the Rafflecopter widget below! The giveaway ends Tuesday, October 28 at 11:59pm PST.
