Nothing will damage your fitness progress more than an injury. However, injuries in the gym can easily arise. This is especially the case if you do not warm-up correctly or follow the correct technique for the workout you’re doing. Keeping that in mind, we are going to take a look at some of the different things that can cause an injury in the gym and, therefore, how to avoid such scenarios from happening.

  • Make sure you follow the correct technique – The first thing you need to do is make sure that you do your exercises with the correct form and technique. This is where a lot of people go wrong. If you carry out an exercise incorrectly, this can end up putting unnatural pressure on muscles and bones.
  • Warm-up before your workout – We are all told about the importance of warming up before we workout. However, there are a lot of people that fail to take this advice. You need to warm-up to ensure that your muscles are ready for your workout. If you don’t, you could easily end up suffering from an injury.
  • Vary your workout – You are advised to vary your workout to reduce the chance of an injury because this will mean that you are working different muscle groups, which is important. This will also help you to keep your motivation levels high as well, as it makes sure you don’t get bored.
  • Stay hydrated – In addition to the advice provided thus far, you need to stay hydrated. After all, when we work out, we sweat, and this means that some of those critical fluids our body needs to take us through the workout program are lost. It is imperative to replace these fluids, and that is why drinking plenty of water comes recommended. Don’t forget that having enough electrolytes is part of proper hydration.
  • Make sure the workout equipment is secure – It’s the gym’s responsibility to maintain their workout equipment. If something doesn’t seem secure or set-up how it should be, don’t use it. Click here if you need advice, especially if you have been injured while at the gym and believe it’s not your fault.
  • Have rest days – A lot of people don’t want to have rest days because they feel like this is simply going to slow them down on their quest to achieve their fitness goals. However, rest days are of huge importance. If you do not rest properly, you are only going to put added strain on your muscles. Your muscles will not have time to repair and this is how serious injuries can happen. Plus, if you think about it, you’re going to halt your progress even more if you find yourself unable to work out at all, right?

There are a lot of different scenarios that can result in someone getting injured in the gym. However, if you follow the advice that has been discussed, you can help prevent any injuries and accidents at the gym!

How To Feel Confident In The Gym

April 8, 2020 By lyndsinreallife 1 Comment

Confidence in the gym isn’t something everyone gets straight away. The gym domain can be a bit of a terrifying place for first-timers, and it can often feel overwhelming or an invasion of privacy in some respects. Here is how to feel confident in the gym so that you can take advantage of all the benefits it can bring to you.

Wear The Right Sports Gear

The right sports gear is an essential part of feeling good in the gym. Think about what you’ve currently got in the way of fitness gear in your wardrobe. For most people who’ve never been to the gym or don’t do much working out, you might not even have any proper fitness wear. It could be a collection of joggers and loose clothing. And although that feels comfortable, it’s not going to necessarily help you feel confident in yourself. Find outfits that help hug your body in the right way and make you feel good. Something from godashsports.com, for example, is a good place to start when you’re shopping around.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

When you’re trying to navigate your way around the gym, there’s a lot of equipment that you’ll likely be unfamiliar with. It’s important that you’re not afraid to ask anyone in the gym about certain equipment because sometimes attempting to use a machine that you’re not aware of can be dangerous. If you’re wondering who to ask, it’s a good idea to seek out one of the personal trainers that will be lurking around the gym for help. They might do a sales pitch to be your trainer, but it’s worth it to know how the equipment works.

Have A Routine Ready Before You Go

Going to the gym and simply making it up as you go along is a little counter-productive. It’s worth it to plan ahead after you’ve been going for a couple of weeks and that way you can feel  more confident in what you’re doing. You appear more experienced too if you’re confidently going from machine to machine. You might also want to break it down by body parts. So one day you could do chest and back, and on another day, you do legs.

Get A Personal Trainer

As mentioned previously, personal trainers will be at your local gym, actively trying to assign clients and it’s up to you whether you take up their offer of a consultation or not. A personal trainer is really useful to have if you’re someone who wants to hit certain goals, get motivated more or to build their confidence in the gym. There’s nothing like being in the presence of someone who knows exactly what they’re doing and is accustomed to the gym environment.

Feeling confident in the gym is something that you’ll figure out because it’s sometimes a case of finding what works for you and makes you feel most comfortable. Use these tips to help with that and enjoy getting fit!

Finding The Perfect Gym For You: 4 Helpful Tips

June 12, 2019 By lyndsinreallife 2 Comments

While it is possible to work on your fitness at home, a gym membership undeniably has its advantages. A gym is a dedicated workout space, so your home can be reserved for relaxation; the equipment is more likely to be high-end. There’s a range of different classes available for when you feel you need to shake things up, and help will be on hand if you run into any difficulties.

However, it’s fair to say that the experience of visiting a gym can vary. Some gyms are excellent, offering a wealth of benefits to their members that more than justifies their fees. Others… aren’t so excellent, and in the worst cases, could actually harm your ability to meet your fitness goals.

If you’re on the lookout for a new gym, here are four tips that can help to make sure you find the perfect gym for your needs.

#1 – Time Your Visit Carefully

Touring a gym before joining is highly recommended. Make sure you plan your visit around the same time as you would usually be working out. Doing so allows you to get a rough idea of how busy the gym is, and allows you to assess the atmosphere and conditions based on what you are most likely to experience if you sign-up.

#2 – Check the Machines Thoroughly

During your visit to a gym you are considering, take the time to check the machines in detail. First and foremost, look at safety aspects; do the machines look modern and well-maintained, or are they in the kind of disrepair that suggests using them may result in needing to call a personal injury attorney in future? In addition, assess the cleanliness; good gyms tend to ensure that their equipment is thoroughly cleaned regularly, so any sign of accumulated dirt will make that gym a no-go.

#3 – Examine the Existing List of Classes and Ask How Popular They Are

If you are considering a gym because they offer a range of classes you are particularly excited to try, it’s important to ask a member of staff how popular each class actually is. Gyms often cancel classes that have relatively few attendees, so you’ll need to make sure that the class you want to try will actually be available. On the flip side, if the classes you are interested in are bordering on too popular, you may find yourself having to join a waiting list before each class – so it may be worth trying a different gym to see if they have better availability.

#4 – Read the Fine Print

It would be impossible to discuss finding a great gym without a discussion of the contract you will be asked to sign, especially given that gym membership contracts have a tendency for being difficult to break.

*Just ask my boyfriend: Planet Fitness will only allow him to cancel his membership by GOING TO THE GYM HE SIGNED UP AT, which mind you, is in California! We live in Nevada now. Ugh, it is so frustrating. Don’t fall into that trap.

Always ask for time to read through your contract in full before signing, paying particular attention to the clauses related to canceling the contract. Hopefully you won’t need to cancel anytime soon, but it’s always important to make sure you know exactly where you stand before you sign on the dotted line.

The four tips above should help you to find the best gym for your needs. Once you find one, come back here and share which gym you chose! I’d love to hear more about it.

ActivMotion Bar: A Better Way To Strengthen Your Core

February 3, 2015 By lyndsinreallife 6 Comments

Guys & gals, I have found my new favorite piece of workout equipment. It’s easy to use, easy to store, and it’s extremely effective!

So what is it?

It’s called ActivMotion Bar.

ActivMotion Bar SweatPink

“The ActivMotion Bar is no ordinary fitness bar. It’s always moving and strengthening your core with every exercise—because it’s filled with rolling steel weights. No other fitness product comes close to creating a multisensory workout experience like this. The moment you pick it up you’ll hear the weights move inside and feel them challenging your body. Whether you’re a beginner, a trainer, a pro athlete or anything in between, it’s time to change the way you train, engage mind and muscle, experience an amazing workout and get in shape quicker than ever before. It’s time for the ActivMotion Bar” (website).

When Fit Approach offered the opportunity to try the ActivMotion bar as part of my #SweatPink ambassadorship, I had to give it a little extra thought (Disclosure: I received a free bar, plus compensation, in exchange for my honest review). I don’t generally use weights during my workouts, so I was a little hesitant. Was it going to be too heavy? Would I end up hurting myself (I can be a total klutz)? As it turns out, I LOVE the ActivMotion bar! It’s light (the one I have, at least; it comes in 6, 8, 10, 15, or 18 lbs), but definitely gives resistance. After a few reps, I start to feel the burn. The day after my first workout with the bar, my arms and core were sore! It was awesome. Along with that, it’s easy to use. It’s one simple bar- it does not require assembly or parts.

Plus, it has rolling steel weights inside! The steel weights help you to strengthen your core during your entire workout. I like the rolling steel weights because they help me to stay balanced (something that’s not-so-easy with Ménière’s Disease).

ActivMotion Bar Clear

A big reason why I like using the ActivMotion bar is that I can use it in my living room, and for any type of workout. I practice yoga, so I don’t use weights often. But I found that I could incorporate it into most of my yoga poses! Then when I’m done with my workout, I can store it in my closet or corner.

I did a 30 minute workout in my living room, and my boyfriend snapped some photos (don’t judge, I’m still learning form!):

If you want to follow a routine, you can purchase DVDs. Choose between Total Body Toning, Active Aging, Training System, Foundation Builder (Level 1), Progressive Movement (Level 2), and Dynamic Performance (Level 3).

After using the ActivMotion Bar for about a month, I’m hooked! I’m seriously so excited to be incorporating the bar into various workouts. Plus my boyfriend loves it too! I made a quick video testimonial of why I love this bar:

My apologies for the vertical screen- I just got an iPhone 6 and had the hardest time holding the phone while recording!

I highly recommend the ActivMotion Bar for anyone who enjoys fitness. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, this bar will definitely help you step up your game!
